Dear Parishioners and Friends,
The message of the death of our Holy Father, Pope Francis, was quite a surprise to most of us. It was only a few hours earlier that Pope Francis, frail and still recovering from illness, appeared at St. Peter’s Square to bless the crowds and the world in the Ubi et Orbi.
The extraordinary circumstances of the election of Pope Francis some twelve years ago brought a lot attention to the Catholic Church, as has the twelve years of his Papacy. To say that the Papacy of Pope Francis was controversial, would be an understatement. But then again so is Jesus. To some Pope Francis was too liberal in his thoughts and actions, to others not liberal enough. Whatever the sentiment, Pope Francis reminded the Catholic world – and indeed the Christian world – of the importance of living the Gospel message, especially the preference for the poor, and concern for all God’s creation. Pope Francis encouraged the faithful of all ages to engage and to be active members of the People of God, to be a voice for the voiceless and strength for the weak. He reminded the clergy of their responsibility to lead with integrity, empathy, holiness and with the concern of their congregations always at the forefront of their decisions.
At this moment, we unite to pray for the soul of our Holy Father, a faithful servant of God and one who dedicated his life to the service of God and the People of God. We also keep in our prayers those who were close to the Pontiff, especially his family and those who served with him throughout his years of priesthood.
Pope Francis had a great dedication and devotion to Our Blessed Mother. Each time he travelled he would visit St. Maria Maggiore to offer his travels to her intercession and on return would give thanks. Let us now ask for our Blessed Mother’s intercession for Pope Francis on this his final pilgrimage into eternal life.
Mass will be celebrated at St. Benedict’s Shrine, Smithfield, on Wednesday 23rd April 2025 at 7:00 pm commencing with Rosary at 6:30 pm. Everyone is most welcome.
